The lion (Panthera leo) is a species of the feline family (Felidae); he is a muscular cat, of deep chest, with a short and rounded head, a reduced neck and round ears, and a hairy tuft at the end of the tail. The lion is sexually dimorphic; males are larger than females with a typical weight range of 150 to 250 kg (330 to 550 lb) for the first and 120 to 182 kg (265 to 400 lb) for the second. Male lions have a prominent mane, which is the most recognizable characteristic of the species. A lion pride consists of a few adult males, females and related puppies. Groups of lion females usually hunt together, preying mainly on large ungulates. The species is an apex and predator keystone, although they take advantage when there are opportunities. It is known that some lions hunt humans, although the species usually does not.

Typically, the lion inhabits meadows and savannas but is absent in dense forests. In general, it is more daytime than other big cats, but when it is pursued it adapts to the activity during the night and the twilight. In the Pleistocene, the lion spread through Eurasia, Africa and the Americas from the Yukon to Peru, but today it has been reduced to fragmented populations in sub-Saharan Africa and a population in critical danger in western India. It has been listed as Vulnerable in the IUCN Red List since 1996 because populations in African countries have decreased by approximately 43% since the early 1990s. Lion populations are unsustainable outside designated protected areas. Although the cause of the decline is not fully understood, habitat loss and conflicts with humans are the main causes of concern.
